The Music Board and staff of the Australia Council were shocked and saddened to hear of the sudden death of Alan Corbet last week.
Alan was a leader in the Australian jazz scene, particularly in his home state of WA. His commitment to the musicians and music he loved was strong and generous, and his knowledge of the scene was broad. Alan tirelessly promoted and worked for the growth of JazzWA, and always went above and beyond the call of duty. He spent countless hours setting up and managing the national jazz website, Jazz Australia, when other volunteers were scarce. He saw this as his way to contribute, but was always sensitive to the views of his colleagues and peers. In typical fashion, he was understated and subtle about his role, gently encouraging others to contribute while taking on much of the workload himself.
Alan was always enthusiastic and positive about jazz and its place in the Australian music sector. He was well informed and knew who to work with to ensure the kinds of outcomes he wanted. He was always respectful but generous with his knowledge, kept people up to date with JazzWA activities, and enthused everyone about the possibilities that arose in his fertile and active mind.
Alan’s sense of humour and gentle ways were a delight to deal with. For those of us who work in bureaucracies, dealing with people of all temperaments is daily fare. It was always a pleasure to pick up the phone and hear Alan’s soft accent and know that an interesting or stimulating conversation was about to take place. In forums and on committees Alan was always the voice of reason, bringing a sense of unity and common purpose to a large group with often disparate needs and goals. Alan was always willing to put his hand up to contribute, and support jazz and improvised music in a practical way as well as strategically.
Alan will be missed by all who knew him and undoubtedly by the many individuals and organisations that he so ably supported through his working life. The staff and Music Board join me in offering sincere condolences to Alan’s family. He will not be forgotten.
