Social networking websites continue to provide musicians with ways to increase their profiles and connect with their listeners and other artists.

Many young jazz musicians now have MySpace profiles and an increasing number use the video sharing site YouTube to post concert footage. These are two key examples of what digital insiders now refer to as Web 2.0 – the social and interactive net.

One of the most interesting recent examples is a clip of Sydney band Aronas, led by pianist Aron Ottignon.

Recorded at @Newtown in Sydney, the footage conveys the energy and immediacy of the performance.

Visit the band’s MySpace profile:
www.myspace.com/ aronas

Click the “Play” button in the centre of the screen to start the clip.

Other groups who have published footage include:

Daorum, a collaboration between Korean pansori singer Bae Il Tong and Sydney musicians Phil Slater, Carl Dewhurst, Matt McMahon and Simon Barker. This was recorded at the Jeonju Sori Festival in Korea in September 2006.

Western Australian group Void. (It should be noted that this clip is low-fi and not representative of the quality of the DVD from which it comes.)

Another Western Australian group, Speedball – Live at the Round Theatre (WAAPA)

Write to us at editor@jazz.org.au if you know of any Australian musicians on YouTube. We’re keen to feature more video content.
