Brisbane Live Band Broadcast from the Melbourne Women’s International Jazz Festival.

Brisbane tentet the West End Composers Collective is performing the first ever live to air broadcast from famous jazz venue “Bennett’s Lane” in Melbourne on ABC Radio Nationals “Live on Stage” Friday 17th December from 7pm.

As part of the 8th annual Melbourne Women’s International Jazz Festival the concert will feature original works by Queensland women composers Laura Kahle and Kristin Berardi played by Brisbane’s finest jazz musicians.

This outstanding ensemble founded by trumpeter/composer Laura Kahle and pianist/arranger Steve Newcomb began in 2003 as a monthly gathering to encourage Brisbane’s creative improvising musicians, composers and arrangers to workshop original material at the Tongue and Groove café, West End. Thus the name!

With the success of these monthly gatherings, the growth in repertoire and a grant from Arts Queensland, they launched their debut album “Downstream” in February 2004 to critical acclaim.

The West End Composers Collective are fundraising for their travels south at gigs in Brisbane on:

Wednesday December 8th at the Milkbar, Caxton Street
and
Sunday December 12th at the Zoo

The West End Composer’s Collective is conducted by Laura Kahle and features

Georgia Weber – double bass (BITTERSUITE)
Joe Marchisella – drums
Mikael Strand – trombone
Graeme Norris – Baritone Sax

…it’s rich & subtle, beautifully voiced,…… & also blessed with a fine, distinctive vocalist in Kristin Berardi.
