The Brisbane International Jazz Festival is really helping put Brisbane on the map as a new world music city,” said Artistic Director Lynette Irwin. “It’s not just about big names and it’s not just about navel gazing, it’s about celebrating jazz in all of its forms and really providing a smorgasbord of options for the whole of Brisbane to embrace the love of jazz, which those of us in the music community are lucky enough to experience year-round!”

Now in its third year the Brisbane International Jazz Festival continues to grow as a premier jazz event, with a focus on innovation and accessible programming.

The Tord Gustavsen Quartet from Norway are one of Europe’s most celebrated jazz innovators, Poland’s Artur Dutkiewicz Trio and South Korea’s Near East Quartet all make their Australian debut at the festival.

Japan’s Hiroyuki Minowa Trio from Takatsuki City perform with Toowoomba artists Bruce Woodward and Melissa Forbes in a special collaboration which brings together sister cities in creativity.

Cairns Indigenous jazz singer Wilma Reading collaborates with the Andrew Butt Trio, bringing her experience of over fifty years in the industry including three BBC TV specials, appearances on the US Johnny Carson, sold out shows at the Copacabana, performing with Duke Ellington and Charles Aznavour, appearing in US films and selling out shows in Russia.

The event this year will tip its hat to Brisbane’s jazz roots, with an installation celebrating Peter Hackworth’s ‘Primitif’ Café’, the place for artists and socialites to be in Brisbane from 1957 to its closure after the flood of 1974. The installation will collect stories, images and music and will recreate ‘The Prim” for one special afternoon— think Mad Men by the Brisbane River.
