A micro festival of new music

“This constellation of musicians brings together from around the world just about every musical language currently filed under “improvised music”.  Jon Rose

February Jump Up is a new micro-festival in Sydney curated by Jon Rose who has assembled an eight player line-up that includes artists touring from Switzerland, Norway and the Netherlands as well as Berlin-based Australian drummer Tony Buck (the Necks) and Australasian jazz master, pianist Mike Nock.

Described by Time Out New York as “brilliant” during his most recent Stone residency, Rose is widely recognised as one of Australia’s most prolific contemporary composers and improvising artists. For this performance, Rose has devised a Time Score which enables artists to share the stage in solo, duo and trio settings that will evolve throughout the evening.

Rose says of the event ““This constellation of musicians brings together from around the world just about every musical language currently filed under “improvised music”. In February Jump Up, one of the main parameters of music, namely time, will be set by a digital clock, everything else is spontaneous combustion”.

Joining them in the inferno is Swiss vocalist Franziska Baumann, virtuosic Norwegian trombonist Henrik Norstebo, Holland’s saxophone and electronics wizard Luc Houtkamp, co-founder of the NOWnow Festival, bassist Clayton Thomas and Sydney’s newest talent guitarist Julia Reidy.

The festival is presented by Sydney Improvised Music Association.
