Next weekend, Sydney’s favourite musician’s co-op, the Jazzgroove Association presents its sixth annual Summer Fiesta.

“The experience is genre-blurring and sometimes challenging,” explains the festival’s co-ordinator Eamon Dilworth, ”it includes edgy artists in the early stages of their careers alongside seasoned masters.”

Dilworth describes the weekend as focusing on local musicians interacting with people on a local scale. “There’s often a ‘fourth wall’ in larger scale productions,” he explains. “The Fiesta will be more of a lively conversation between audience and performers, in great local settings.”

This year the festival will be centred around a listening-focused Concert Series presented at Foundry 616 in Ultimo, and a family friendly afternoon “Jazzgroove On The Green” on Saturday and Sunday, hosted by The Lord Wolseley Hotel.

The line-up includes locals such as joyous contemporary trad-gypsy-swing band The Cope St Parade and the imaginative guitar, mandolin and banjo work of Ben Hauptmann.

Prodigious vocalist and composer Gian Slater (Melbourne) will headline at Foundry 616 on Saturday, and will also be presenting a workshop presented in conjunction with APRA/AMCOS.

“This year we wanted to go grassroots.” says Dilworth. “This Fiesta is about people coming together as a community, in Ultimo, to share in a Jazzgroove experience.”
