Featuring established Jazzgroove musicians alongside the finest emerging artists the nation has to offer.
Jazzgroove summer festival is back in 2016 showcasing the best Australian jazz and improvised music over 3 days of gigs and workshops in Ultimo explore new technology, or kick back with the kids program.
The Festival kicks off on Friday 15 January with the technologically-driven improvisation of The Sticks featuring Ben Hauptmann, the high energy stylings of The Cooking Club and the luscious sounds of Lekker on stage at Foundry 616.
Continuing the triple-bill concert series on Saturday 16 sees electroacoustic beat-driven trio Brokebeat Mountain, the funky party tunes of Tony Electro Heavy Vibe Concert Band and the jazz/hip-hop/indie-rock fusion of Career Advice (Melb).
Closing the festival on Sunday 17 will be the “mind-altering whirlwind” that is Ollie McGill Trio (Melb), the labyrinthine melodies and rhythmic vistas of the David Groves Quintet, and the powerhouse Zac Hurren/Julien Wilson Quartet (Bris/Melb).
As well as the concert series at Foundry 616, there are a number of of free events around Ultimo, including a Masterclass presented in conjunction with APRA/AMCOS with Alon Ilsar in which he will demonstrate his one-of-a-kind gestural electronic drum kit, an interactive children’s performance/workshop with pint-sized brass band The Glorious Sousaphonics at the Ultimo Community Centre, and two family-friendly outdoor gigs on the Quarry Green at The Lord Wolseley Hotel, on Saturday 16 featuring Melbourne trad-jazz The Lagerphones and world-music sensation Fat Yahoozah on Sunday 17.
