Saxophonist Julien Wilson has earned a swag of accolades since he won the national jazz award at Wangaratta in 1994. Earlier this year, he won the $20,000 Freedman Jazz Fellowship.

His trio is an unusual one, with Stephen Grant on accordion and Stephen Magnusson on guitar: there is no piano, bass or drums.

The accordion has never been really big on the jazz scene. Its nostalgic sound has mostly been associated with European pop and folk, especially music from France and Italy. But in Grant’s hands it becomes an impressive part of this exploratory trio, blending perfectly with Wilson’s tenor sax and Magnusson’s guitar.
