Rating: ****

The third album from Melbourne quartet, Logic? occupies the gossamer ground between complexity and accessibility while maintaining musical integrity. All tracks are originals by either saxophonist Tim Wilson or guitarist Glenn Cannon and influences are diverse with jazz/fusion ideas often prominent.

Part 3 has an unmistakeable drum‘n’bass feel showcasing Ben Vanderwal and Gavin Pearce’s electric bass, with a rocket trajectory soprano saxophone solo. The Source opens as a soulful ballad with steel string guitar chords ringing evocatively underneath Wilson’s winged alto before the tempo increases, stoking saxophone and guitar to feverish spikes. Scarlette, named after a Melbourne bar is an unlikely, quite simple waltz with subdued, drifting solos from guitar and bass, while the most complex piece, Big Apple offers an opportunity for an extended guitar solo to create a fast-tracked journey, which is taken up by the speeding alto.

This album is a highly talented mix of some of the best elements of rock skilfully combined with contemporary jazz concepts.
