The 2009 Melbourne International Jazz Festival program has been announced and features an interesting mix of overseas stars and local artists. Interestingly, it also includes major collaborations between the two.

The international contingent includes pianist (and poet) Cecil Taylor, on his second visit to Australia, bassist Charlie Haden, guitarist Bill Frisell, drummer Jim Black, who was a guest at Sydney’s Jazz Now a few years ago, tenor player Joshua Redman and altoist Tim Berne.

Among the Australian artists are Adam Simmons, Allan Browne, Zac Hurren, Julien Wilson and Sam Anning.

The Festival’s artist-in-residence Charlie Haden will create an Australian version of the Liberation Music Orchestra with local musicians, including Paul Grabowsky, Jamie Oehlers and Scott Tinkler.

The Festival has cast the jazz net widely, showcasing the avant-garde and free dimension of the music (Cecil Taylor, Pateras Baxter Brown) its rock tributaries (Laughing Clowns) and seemingly mandatory pop singers (Carl Riseley and Kate Ceberano).
