Double Dream is an exciting, innovative project for two pianos created by classical pianist Mikhail Rudy and renowned jazz pianist Misha Alperin.

The work is an interactive concert of partly rewritten and partly improvised “recompositions” of works by Haydn, Beethoven, Schumann, Chopin, Debussy, Janácek and Scriabin.

Taking the classical compositions as their starting point, Rudy and Alperin embark of a voyage of teasing and sophisticated improvisations. The two highly accomplished musicians bring their wit, charm and elegance to the performance, both transforming and extending each piece with new intrigue, beauty and poetry.

Double Dream has been performed to enthusiastic audiences throughout Europe. The CD, of the same name, was released in 2004 on EMI Classics, receiving numerous distinctions including Gramophone’s “Best Record of the Month”.

An artist of great creativity and charisma, Mikhail Rudy excites audiences worldwide with his musicality and virtuosity. Born in Russia, where he studied at Moscow Conservatory with Jacob Flier, Rudy settled in France where he has been appointed Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres by the French Government. As a concert and recording pianist his honours include the Prix de l’Academie du Disque Français, Grand
Prix du Disque, Grand Prix Academie Charles Cros and Grand Prix Liszt.

Rudy has travelled the world playing with orchestras including Cleveland Orchestra (with conductor Lorin
Maazel for his American debut), London Symphony Orchestra (with Tilson Thomas for his London debut), Berlin Philharmonic (with Mariss Jansons), Pittsburgh Symphony, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Munich Philharmonic, London Philharmonic, Melbourne Symphony and Sydney Symphony.

Rudy founded the prestigious St Riquier Festival where he was Artistic Director for 20 years. He is also a respected television broadcaster and has contributed to a BBC television documentary on the life and music of Tchaikovsky. In France he created a series of radio projects for France-Musique on the life and works of Scriabin, Brahms, Szymanowski and Janáček.

Born in the Ukraine Misha Alperin grew up in Moldavia, where he trained on classical piano before embarking on a career as composer and arranger, increasingly using elements of traditional Russian music in his compositions. In the 1980s he moved to Moscow and founded the Moscow Art Trio with horn-player Arkady Shilkloper and folk singer/clarinetist Sergei Starostin.

He has also worked Angelite (the Bulgarian women’s choir) and the Huun Huur Tu (the throat-singers of Tuva). Since 1993 Alperin has lived in Oslo, Norway, where he is professor of music at the Norwegian Academy of Music. He has released several works on ECM Records including the internationally acclaimed Waves of Sorrow (with Arkady Shilkloper) and Folk Dreams (with Moscow Art Trio).

Mikhail Rudy also performs in The Pianist. Misha Alperin also performs with Moscow Art Trio.
