manynotesCombining the spontaneity of jazz with the rich heritage and spirit of Jewish music, the Jewish Museum of Australia is proud to present So Many Notes! A Celebration of Jewish Jazz. Produced by Ella Levy and directed by Adam Starr, the event will be an unforgettable afternoon of music showcasing the contribution that Jewish jazz performers have made to the Australian and international live music scene.

Deborah Conway and Sophie Brous at Melbourne’s BMW Edge, Federation Square on 16 November, will present a stunning line- up of over 20 Jazz greats from around Australia: including the three Sedergreens, Allan Zavod, Mark Isaacs, Lucky Oceans, Simon Tedeschi, Ron and Brett Rosenberg, Ben Winkelman, Barnaby Gold, Luke Howard, Yaron Hallis (Monsieur Camembert), Simon and Adam Starr, Ernie Gruner, Willy Zygier, and Ariel Valent.

Improvisation has been the core of Klezmer music for centuries, and is also a significant part of the cantorial tradition. It was no great leap for Jewish musicians (on their frequent travels of the last century) to integrate new music from around the world, in particular America. The new migrants adapted it to their long tradition of extemporizing over themes that encapsulate their life experience, often sorrowful like the blues, but frequently joyous. Most of the composers of the jazz standard repertoire were Jewish, as well as performers and indeed on all levels of the burgeoning entertainment industry.

This tradition has been continued at the highest level in Australia with many of the most respected jazz musicians being Jewish, bringing their unique blend of life experiences and history to this most expressive of music forms.

Based around the community values that bind the Jewish community together, the musicians are gathering to explore the music they grew up with and reconnect with old friends over a bagel or two.

Australia’s most respected and acclaimed jazz musicians combine the spontaneity of jazz with the rich heritage and spirit of Jewish music to ensure So Many Notes! A Celebration of Jewish Jazz is an historic afternoon event not to be missed.
