Tina Harrod has won the Best Australian Independent Jazz Album award for her recent CD Worksongs.

The announcement was made as part of the Air Awards ceremony held recently at Melbourne’s Corner Hotel.

Harrod’s album has garnered considerable acclaim since its release. Writing in The Australian, John McBeath said, “This album fixes Tina Harrod’s position as a foremost jazz vocalist who has developed a superb musical combination.”

The Sydney Morning Herald’s John Shand was similarly impressed. “’_Round Midnight is the big test. The apotheosis of the jazz ballad, it leaves nowhere to hide, so any singer failing to fully grapple with its genius and potency is left floundering. Harrod gives you goosebumps.

“It’s as if she’s singing about the last night of life, stretching vowels for telling timbral effect and sometimes letting her voice crack like a mirror held up to the soul.”

The other nominees in the jazz category included:

  • Ohlers/Grabowsky/Beck
    Lost and Found
  • Gest8
    Kaleidoscope
  • Matt McMahon & Guy Strazz 2 at 1
  • Mike Nock Project
    Meeting Of The Waters
