Donald English takes the prize for this year’s JMO composition competition, composer Kel Ottaway

Last night in Sydney, the Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra presented the latest instalment of the National Big Band Composition Competition. 3 finalists, chosen from 39 entries from Australia and NZ, were invited to travel to Sydney to rehearse the JMO before conducting the orchestra as part of the concert which was recorded and broadcast by ABC Jazz.

The winning composition ‘Donald English’ by Kelly Ottaway received a cash prize of $3,000, a professionally recorded version of their performance with the JMO by ABC Jazz, and the chance to have their composition featured on a future JMO release.

Esteemed judges Dave Panichi, Florian Ross, and Mace Francis plus the musicians of the Orchestra awarded the 2016 National Big Band Composition Competition prize to Kelly Ottaway for his composition ‘Donald English’ dedicated to his grandfather.

ABC Jazz will broadcast the event, Thursday Sept 22nd, 9pm on ABC Jazz.
