WAYJOWA Youth Jazz Orchestra welcomes the appointment of new General Manager, Fiona Symonds.

Fiona Symonds has been involved in the Western Australian performing arts industry for almost twenty years, and has worked in a variety of capacities including events coordination, venue management and stage management.

“WAYJO is a dynamic organisation with an impressive past and a very bright future, and it plays a vital role within the WA community”, said Ms Symonds.

From a team of just one full-time and 3 part-time staff in 2008, WAYJO now have two full-time and 9 part-time team members.  Nearing the 30th year of the organisation in 2013, the appointment of Fiona Symonds as General Manager is another ambitious step for the small arts organisation.

Fiona comes to WAYJO from the City of Joondalup, where she was responsible for programming and delivering large-scale concerts and festivals, attended by over 70,000 people each year. At Joondalup, Fiona enjoyed working with outstanding Australian musicians including Katie Noonan, Clare Bowditch, Josh Pyke, Marcia Hines, Renee Geyer and The Whitlams, amongst others.

“I am very excited and proud to be working with the bands, as WAYJO continues to foster outstanding young musical talent”, said Ms Symonds.

WAYJO’s 2012 Season Program, launched in early November, presents a strong line-up of international and national guest artists as well as a tour to Albury/Wodonga and Sydney for the benefit and development of the bands’ young players.

Auditions for the 2012 competitive intake of musicians are scheduled for 3 & 4 December 2011 with all band positions up for grabs.  Those who make it will be amongst the very best young players in WA and are rewarded with career-defining experiences – touring, training, recording and performing with world-class guest artists.

WAYJO’s final performance this year is at The Charles Hotel on Monday 28 November for the Perth Jazz Society with performances from all the WAYJO bands and prizes to be won!
