Melbourne-based vocalist, songwriter and broadcaster Chelsea Wilson has been given the prestigious task of programming Australian artists for Stonnington Jazz 2016.

“I want to see locals and visitors experience the sheer talent of our local musicians. We’ll be taking the music to the streets, the libraries, the theatres and rarely-used hidden spaces throughout the City.”

For the first time, the City of Stonnington has appointed a performer as Artistic Director for the eleventh year of its award-winning jazz festival. Stonnington Jazz has a strong track record of presenting performances from 100% Australian talent.

Ms Wilson said, “I have truly loved attending festival shows throughout the years – not to mention performing on the opening night of the 10th anniversary – and am honoured to come on board this year as Artistic Director.”

As a musician herself, Chelsea hopes that her enthusiasm for exploring new material, different styles and diverse sounds will come to the fore. “I am particularly interested in developing collaborations with a range of artists who are keen to create new projects and premier innovative works.”

The 2016 program will incorporate new acts, new venues and include genres within the Jazz umbrella including Ethio-Jazz, Latin-Jazz, Cabaret and Soul-Jazz and will present an eclectic mix of original, improvised and heritage Jazz music.
Ms Wilson added, “Expanding into new spaces in the Stonnington area, this year’s program will dig a little deeper into the niche scenes of Australian music and present sounds and acts never heard before at the festival.  I don’t want to give too much away, but I’m very excited about sharing a broad and dynamic program with you all.
