CAPITAL JAZZ PROJECT
Canberra’s midwinter celebration of jazz now in its second year, with a ten-day jazz music event from 3 – 12 AUGUST
The line-up features international jazz phenomenon multi-reed soloist and composer Bennie Maupin whose distinctive sound can be heard on recordings of jazz luminaries like Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Roy Haynes and Freddie Hubbard. Maupin is known internationally for his contribution toward the recognition of the bass clarinet in the world of improvisational music and still influences the music scene after decades of accomplishments. Maupin is a recipient of the prestigious US Benny Golson Jazz Master Award bestowed upon prominent jazzmen that have made extraordinary contributions to jazz music.
Education activities will take place at the ANU School of Jazz daily. For the ten days of Capital Jazz Project Bennie Maupin will work alongside students and staff: giving masterclasses; coaching individuals and ensembles; performing with student ensembles in Freshbace in a night about guessing what will happen next; and performing in Hands On with ANU Faculty Staff and alumni Miroslav Bukovsky, Gary France, James Greening, Eric Ajaye, Michael Azzopardi, Carl Dewhurst and Mark Sutton.
Celebrated Australian jazz pianist, composer, arranger, and improviser Joe Chindamo will work as the Australian artist-in-residence as well as presenting in a breathtaking live performance format his acclaimed recording, Another Place Some Other Time – hailed by Ausjazz as – 'one of the must-have albums of the year' reinterpreting themes from the soundtracks of genre-shaping American filmmakers, the Coen Brothers with an ensemble of outstanding Australian musicians.
The Australian musicians performing represent some of this country's finest and highly regarded jazz musicians such as: Bernie McGann, Sandy Evans, Brendan Clarke, Allan Browne, Gian Slater, Dick & Christa Hughes, Richard Maegrith, Eugene Ball, Cameron Undy, Zoe Hauptmann, Ben Hauptmann, Nick Haywood, Brett Hirst, Alex Pertout, James Greening, Jonathan Pease, Evri Evripedou, Nigel MacLean and many more.
Capital Jazz Project in 2012 has special focus on jazz and words and featured in the program are: Gone, Without Saying singer and composer [and ex-Canberran] Gian Slater’s award-winning work for fourteen voices exploring the notion of communication between and without words performed by Melbourne-ensemble Invenio; Miles Merrill Chicago-born writer-performer and wordy raconteur director of The Australian Poetry Slam steps into a daring wild wordplay flinging words in a rapid-fire onslaught of versified emotion with jazz musicians The Gai Bryant Quartet; and iconic Melbourne drummer Allan Browne with his Conjuror project, an amalgam of new music and text about his life where jazz and jazz musicians figure prominently.
Conversations over Jazz Writing sees Extempore Publishing managing editor/publisher and promoter of all things jazz Miriam Zolin quiz some of Australia’s leading jazz commentators and writers [John Clare, Jasmine Crittenden, Andrew Ford, Eric Pozza, and John Shand] on the question of whether the best music criticism should be more than what the music sounded like and who played it.
Other international artists include: Shanghai-based Lawrence Ku Trio [guitar,drums,organ] with Pictures Suite, a collection of compositions that represent several musical still lifes of Shanghai; New Zealand's distinctively innovative contemporary jazz pianist Charmaine Ford; and Morrocan-born jazz guitarist Albare and his acclaimed collaborators including German harmonica virtuoso Hendrik Meurkens and Cuban drummer Ignacio Berroa, with Long Way iTD.

Capital Jazz Project is a partnership between The Street Theatre, a proven and nationally respected music and artistic hub and the Australian National University School of Music, the high level music education institution whose students and alumni heavily feed into the musical landscape of Australia. In 2012 Capital Jazz Project has partnered with Canberra 100, The Canberra Times and Extempore to develop and grow this exciting opportunity to create a national forum around jazz through bringing top quality jazz acts together in Canberra.
