This year’s Perth International Arts Festival is making a splash with Wynton Marsalis. At the Sydney Festival the program boasts a visit from Antonio Sanchez, award winning drummer and a premiere by local artist Stu Hunter.

Sydney and Perth in festival mode

You can’t do a search for ‪jazz on the Sydney Festival website and come up with anything useful, but it’s worth checking out this year as there is some great jazz in next year’s festival.

You can catch drummer ‪Antonio Sanchez, four time Grammy award winning artist. He performs along with the movie Birdland.  Performances are taking place at both the State Theatre and also at Riverside in Parramatta, the premiere of Stu Hunter’s final piece in his trilogy, The Migration, ‪‎Hailu Mergia with Tony Buck & @Mike Majkowski,  Tiwi + Jazz  and Secrets from Belgian.

We’ll be interviewing some of these artists in future editions.  For the moment you can find more information here

In Perth, Wynton Marsalis, brings his renowned Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra to the Festival, performing jazz classics, with not only his band but also with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra as they perform Marsalis’ homage to the evolution of swing, Swing Symphony.

Other jazz on the program are the Necks and Hauschka for avante garde experimental jazz.
