As well as being outstanding improvisers, all four (bands) created utterly distinct sound worlds. Perhaps the most singular was Wilson’s.

His trio with guitarist Stephen Magnusson and accordionist Stephen Grant created a warm glow in the austere Studio – more of embers than actual fire. Whether his tenor saxophone sprawled across the other instruments with creamy sound and legato phrasing or was more molten, it was always imposing.
