Following a successful series of contemporary jazz concerts in 2005, the Brisbane Powerhouse again presents a program of jazz.

Curated by Mark Isaacs, the February concerts – dubbed Hot Nights Cool Jazz -feature a trio led by US pianist and composer Lynne Arriale and a strong line-up of Australian musicians.

Arriale, James Muller Trio and the quartet Tinkler, Rex, Grabowsky, Edie will perform in the Powerhouse Theatre. Singers Megan Washington and Ingrid James, guitarist James Sherlock, Toby Wren Trio and Brisbane quartet Kidney play free gigs in the Spark Bar before and after the headlining artists.

Isaacs says the 2006 concerts were prompted by the success of last year’s Cool Nights Hot Jazz series. “The popularity of the event proved to us that Brisbanites love their jazz and showed us that if you put on a great selection of international, national and local artists people will travel the distance for the experience.”

While most of the Australian musicians on the bill are well known to local audiences, Arriale does not have the same profile despite her successes at home. Working in the territory originally mapped by Bill Evans, the lyrical pianist released Arise in 2003 to positive reviews and a chart position in the Billboard Top 20. The trio has released eight other albums.
