There’s no doubt about it, James Flynn is a Rolls Royce performer. He is one of the few male jazz singers in WA with a talent and versalility that is rare to find.

As a singer there are few who can deliver with what seems such ease, and even fewer who can keep an audience as spellbound as this young Scot. Flynn brings style and sophistication to everything he does, has a captivating stage presence and an extremely engaging personality.

James works mainly with award winning pianist Russell Holmes & his trio featuring Matt Willis on bass (see April feature) and Michael Perkins replacing Danny Susnjar on drums.

It’s with this band, augmented with Paul Abbott on sax & Rodney Vervest on guitar that James will tour his Nat King Cole show “Unforgettable” later this year. The 26-date regional tour of WA is proving very popular with bookings and James intends taking the production to Tasmania and the Eastern States next year.

James also launched his 16-piece Sinatra style big band earlier this year at a concert in Joondalup. The ‘Fly Big Band’ perform mainly at festivals and corporate functions.

James started his career as an Aircraft Engineer for Rolls Royce but left the industry soon after qualifying to pursue a career in entertainment. Fifteen years and countless performances later and he’s never looked back. He claims to have been the original tap dog tap, dancing in his working boots as a wind up for his engineering colleagues.

Notable performances include: Touring “Streisand & Sinatra Through the years” (British) “Singing & Swinging” (British) “The Song Stylists” (Spain & Scotland) “Dear Mr Cole” (Spain & UK) Soloist: West Australian Symphony Orchestra & West Australian Army Concert Band Support Act: Martin Taylor, Ray Charles , Tommy Emanuel & Demis Roussos Festival performances: Edinburgh Jazz Festival, Glasgow Jazz Festival, Dunoon Jazz Festival, Malaga Jazz Festival (Spain), Perth Jazz Festival (WA) Jacaranda Jazz Festival (WA).

CD recordings: “James Flynn in Love Down Under” Featuring The Garry Lee Quartet “Colour Me Blue” Featuring John Goldie on guitar “When Everything Clicks” Featuring UK pianist Alan McPike “You’ve Changed” Featuring The Mike Nelson Trio & Danny Moss (This CD is now available at ABC shops)
James can been seen performing on a number of occasions in May ( see gig list) and will be appearing with WASO again on July 26 and 27 at His Majesty’s Theatre with old pal Libby Hammer in a musical tribute to Frank Sinatra.

As an Actor and Scriptwriter James has performed all over the UK with various Theatre companies in everything from Sondhiem to Shakespeare. He has also worked in Television and Radio on such classics as “Rab C Nesbit” – BBC , “Taggart” – STV, “The Justice Game” – CH 4 and “False or True” – Children’s BBC as well as various TV commercials.

James runs his own theatre company, based in Perth WA, where he writes, produces and directs children’s musical productions for touring. Pickles Productions has toured to over 20,000 children in WA last year and it’s most recent production “Inspector Pickles” won the Heart Foundation Award as the best nutrition production in the state for 2001.
