A collaboration between Australian and Japanese musicians is the the centrepiece of this year’s Jazz:Now concert series.

The Japan Australia Jazz Orchestra celebrates the 30th anniversary of a friendship treaty between the two countries. Concerts will be performed here and in Japan.

The Orchestra is:
Makoto Kuriya – creative director, piano
Ken Ota – saxophone
Koichi Osamu – bass
Hiromitsu Agatsuma – shamisen
Cameron Deyell, creative director – guitar
Matt Keegan – tenor saxophone
Phil Slater – trumpet
Simon Barker – drums & percussion

Jazz:Now will feature other projects, including Matt McMahon’s Streams and Paths, which will render live the sublime music he produced on his debut album as leader. Gerard Masters’ Finn Brothers Project will offer new interpretations of some iconic pop tunes.

Last year, Bernie McGann and Paul Grabowsky performed a ravishing set of standards, and this year, Dale Barlow and Steve McKenna team up to work in this most intimate of settings.

Those who haven’t yet heard Katie Noonan sing will no doubt want to make the most of the opportunity when she performs with her jazz-folk trio, Elixir. Those who have, will need no urging.
