awardsThis year saxophone is the featured instrument at the National Jazz Awards and organisers say they received a record number of entries.

The ten finalists are:

• James Annesley, 29 (Melbourne)
• Nick Bowd, 30 (Sydney)
• Jon Crompton, 23 (Melbourne)
• Zac Hurren, 31 (Brisbane)
• David Jackson, 25 (Sydney)
• Jacam Manricks, 33 (currently living in New York)
• Willow Neilson, 31 (currently living in Shanghai)
• Phil Noy, 32 (Melbourne)
• James Sandon, 33 (Perth)
• Tim Wilson, 34 (Melbourne)

The three judges – Mike Nock, Julien Wilson and Jamie Oehlers – selected the finalists on a blindfold basis.

The ten saxophonists will perform at Wangaratta with pianist Sam Keevers, bassist Phil Stack (winner of the 2008 National Jazz Awards) and drummer Ben Vanderwal. After the first round, three will be selected for the final.
