Wolfgang Muthspiel trio, with Larry Grenadier and Brian Blade, perform in Sydney 9th August
An interview with Wolfgang Muthspiel for Jazz Australia.
“Wolfgang Muthspiel is shining light of the contemporary jazz-guitar generation” – The New Yorker.
Muthspiel has commanded global attention for his daring musicality and dazzling technique. Widely regarded as a musical genius among his contemporaries.
In this concert, Muthspiel performs alongside the hippest rhythm section on the scene, bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Brian Blade.
JK: What sort of jazz scene was there where you grew up?
WM: I grew up in Graz, Austria. There was a good Jazz Department at the University and we were a group of enthusiastic students who played in each others bands and went to see the masters who stopped by to play concerts. It was an inspiring environment to explore.
JK: What is your next project?
WM: My next project is a quintet to be released on ECM, an album of my compositions. The players are Brian Blade, drums, Larry Grenadier, bass, Brad Mehldau, piano, and Ambrose Akinmusire, tp.
JK: What can Australian audiences expect to hear?
WM: I have Trio album on ECM called Driftwood. We will be playing some material from this album. You can also watch these youtube clips to get an idea what we sound like as a trio.

JK: How do you find the difference in interpretation from Europe to the US?
WM:I get that question about the difference between US and EU Jazz a lot. I think the good players are not that different by now. I have lived in the States for 15 years and for me it was important to feel this energy and the level of craft in Jazz, especially in rhythmic terms. There is a connection to the Jazz tradition that I feel is very alive in the US, even from players who make quite modern music which is far away from straight ahead Jazz. This link is significant.
JK: What is your one take away experience from living in America?
WM: Community and Freedom to invent yourself
