The study is driven by the desire to play a part in contributing academic research to the discussion about the jazz sector’s share of government funding and its role in Victoria’s music sector. It discusses the sector's current state and looks into its future. Due to the lack of research on Victoria’s jazz music sector from the perspective of industry professionals such as venue owners, festival promoters, journalists and musicians, the study provides with this research what seems to me the groundwork for a discussion about Arts and Cultural Policy concerning the sector.

This online questionnaire is addressed to all Jazz musicians in Victoria to find out about their practice and their role within the macrocosm Jazz sector. It includes 25 questions in 5 categories and takes a maximum of 15 minutes to fill out.

This research will be the first of its kind and the more musicians participating in it, the more convincing the findings.

It is being undertaken by Dominik Jaeckel, a Master of Arts and Cultural Management student at University Melbourne.

(He is also a musician, a vocalist, with performance and industry experience in Europe).
