The 2012 Melbourne Jazz Fringe Festival, presented in association with: Northcote Town Hall, Jazzhead, extempore & the Melbourne Jazz Co-op.
On Sunday May 13th from 5.00PM at the Northcote Town Hall, the Melbourne Jazz Fringe Festival presents its 8th annual APRA Composer Commission Concert. Following the acclaimed success of previous winners such as Fran Swinn, Gian Slater, Jex Saarelaht, Colin Hopkins, Erik Griswold and Ren Walters, the performance of 2012 winner Tilman Robinson’s new work "If on a Winter's Night a Traveller", inspired by Italo Calvino’s 1979 postmodern novel, will continue the tradition of groundbreaking performances by recipients of this prestigious award. Performed by Robinson’s Network of Lines, the work attempts to replicate the unique structure of Calvino's iconic novel. By employing elements of through-composition and free improvisation the work allows the musicians to speak directly to the audience as well as forming a cohesive musical narrative.
